Ecclesiology: Church Membership

Chris Hefner

What is a Biblical Church Member?

Biblical church members believe the right things about the Bible, Christ, church, etc.

Church Doctrine

Church Ordinances that picture the gospel.

Theological Triage

Biblical church members belong to God as Father, Christ as brother, and others as brothers and sisters.

God is our “Father_.” Mt. 6:9

Christ is our “Brother_.”

Fellow believers are “brothers and sisters.”

Church family becomes the most lasting relationships believers will have.

Biblical church members are to behave in ways that edify, glorify, and testify.

We edify when we build up one another toward Christian maturity, care for one another, and encourage one another to love and good works.

We glorify Christ together when we meet for worship, let God’s Word dwell in us richly in Scripture, sermon, and song, and prepare for eternity.

We testify together when we live as the body of Christ showing Christ’s love with our lives and sharing the gospel of the kingdom with our lips.

Theological Takeaway: As our membership with one another is intricately connected with our union with Christ, local church members have an obligation to reflect Christ in our vertical and horizontal relationships.

Worship Takeaway: The most significant expression of our belonging together is in our worship of Christ.

Evangelistic Takeaway: Members are to be on mission leading others follow Jesus by declaring the gospel of the kingdom and inviting our neighbors and the nations into the family.

Relational Takeaway: As members, our individual Christian experiences multiply exponentially alongside our brothers and sisters in local church ministry.
