The Doctrine of Salvation--Issues in Salvation

Chris Hefner

“Once saved, always saved.”

There is a difference between perseverance and assurance. See John 10:27-30; 1 John 5:13

For assurance, focus on the glory of God, the grace of Jesus, and the promises of God, not on feelings

It is the responsibility of the church to practice regenerate church membership through administering baptism and conferring church membership

“Age of Accountability.”

The Bible does note address this issue with the clarity we might like. See 2 Samuel 12:15-23; Numbers 14:20-35

We must affirm what the Bible affirms: the total depravity of man and salvation only through Jesus Christ

“The Sinner’s Prayer.”

“We are saved by God through faith, not by our words (works) or through a formula.”

God is not a genie in a bottle who serves our wishes, nor is he a deity to be controlled by our means. God is free, sovereign, and personal

Theological Takeaway: These issues in salvation find resolution in God’s sovereignty, not our intelligence, comprehension, or clarity

Worship Takeaway: God’s greatness is most personally revealed in our salvation which should lead us to humbly worship God through Christ

Evangelistic Takeaway: It is the power of God through his gospel that saves, so we must willingly, regularly, and faithfully share the gospel and trust God to do the rest

Relational Takeaway: Since God has been sovereign in my salvation, I (we) can trust him to be sovereign in the salvation of others
