Season 2, Episode 4 (This is the 2nd year since starting Radio_SA-Y)
A 25-minute episode talking about cultural appropriation. It is a very quick dip into the surface of the variety of issues that come with cultural appropriation.
The key takeaways:
1. Do not profit off a cultural aesthetic, practice or any other aspect of a culture that is not yours
2. When including other cultures or taking influence, in order to actually appreciate it, make sure that you are not fetishising the culture or the people who belong to that culture, and make sure that you are not adding to stereotypes
3. Make sure that you credit that culture and fight for the rights of people to participate in their own culture.
4. Make sure to support more people of colour who belong to that culture than people who do not belong to that culture.
5. Lastly, always be aware of the cultural/spiritual significance of whatever you are participating in and listen when there are people of colour who tell you not to participate in something.
