Walpurgis Nacht. In Germany, it is remembered as the night when witches and demons gather to celebrate their terrible mysteries. At midnight, the Queen of May appears to drive the cold winter away and bring in the summer. And here and there, even now, little groups of old women gather to think about the seasons of their lives and—-since they have lived through another winter—-to welcome the hope of another summer.
