Chances are, we have all been there - we’ve had an appointment with a doctor or specialist and we leave feeling like our needs were not met and our concerns weren’t listened to. What do you do from there? Is there any recourse or help available to you?
Today we talked to Michelle Spencer, a Patient Advocate at an East Coast Trauma Center. She details what her job functions are and how anyone in her field is patient focused and centered, yearning to make your experience as a patient a better one. To learn more about Michelle, read on!
Michelle has worked in healthcare for over thirty years. She began her career as a claims examiner, moved into the private practice sector as a patient liaison then as a practice administrator. For the last twelve years, Michelle has been a patient advocate at a level one trauma center on the East Coast where she works within patient-focused healthcare and serve as the voice of patients in need. Michelle heads the No One Dies Alone Program; which provides the reassuring presence of a volunteer companion to dying patients who would otherwise be alone.
Michelle is involved with resident education on areas of having difficult conversations and improved communication. She co-teaches at the medical college, and presents at rounds on topics where medical residents can learn how to empower patients and improve the physician /patient relationship through better communication practices.
Michelle recently started a podcast "Healthcare Communication Solutions" where clinical professionals provide resources, strategies, and wisdom on best practices in patient communication for medical interns, residents or anyone in the clinical field. On the podcast, once a month Michelle hosts a Resident Roundtable where 3-4 medical residents will discuss topics, ask questions about all things related to patient communication or enjoy a surprise guest. This podcast is great for anyone in the medical field that interacts with patients clinically or administratively.
