My conversation with Ressel Yu covered a lot of common themes found in Asian/Catholic households; Guilt and Shame, and in her experience physical abuse was common. Her feisty spirit got her into a lot of trouble with her parents who actually brought a priest in to exorcise the "demons" in her when she was a teenager. It took decades to recognize she was a product of her programming. From a young age she could see, hear and speak to spirit. Her parents thought she was crazy and she ended up shutting her gifts down after the exorcism. The message was clear that what she was doing was speaking to the devil. The turning point was when one of her sons asked to go live with his dad because they were fighting so much. Losing him hit hard and caused her to really ask the question "is this all there is?"
This was the opening and beginning of her spiritual awakening. She started reading "the secret" and it resonated with her. it unlocked something, and all her gifts she had suppressed since childhood started to come back online. As she went further on her journey she began to see the patterns and programs surfacing in her adult life. We repeat what we learn so she was very stern raising her children expecting what I call Asian Perfection from them.
The Asian culture values outward appearance and accomplishments more than encouraging you to be your authentic self. Being raised Catholic instills a deep well of shame and struggle; the message that you are always a sinner is reinforced and the culture frowns upon independent thinking and using discernment around information you're taught to believe. The result is an inability to think for yourself and discern your own truth without guilt.
Another program Ressel had to break was her relationship with money. Her abuse was tied to her parents financial struggles and being beaten while hearing how hard her parents work for their money and how ungrateful she is. She believed money was a source of suffering and it wasn't until she healed and released this program that true abundance came into her life.
