Do the environmental and geographic characteristics of a region dictate the course of its development, or vice versa? In this episode of the Shrinking Cities podcast, hosts and urban studies students Susie Steinfield and Sophia Zhang explore the history of Milwaukee’s growth and subsequent shrinkage through the lens of the city’s ever-changing relationship to its natural environment. We discuss different instances within the past century in which Milwaukee has acted upon its own landscape in the interest of growth and development, and how these interventions, for better or worse, have impacted the lives of the city’s inhabitants.
