Bitterness is caused when we let NEGATIVE things that happened to US start

to live IN us.

Hebrews 12:15 See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no

bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

Our tendency is to justify bitterness by calling it “JUSTICE”.

Romans 12:19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s

wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

Genesis 4:3-8 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an

offering to the Lord.   And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of

the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,   but

on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and

his face was downcast.   Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is

your face downcast? 7  If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you

do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but

you must rule over it.”   Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the

field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

1. Bitterness only needs TIME before it turns DEADLY.

Genesis 4:3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an

offering to the Lord.

2. Bitterness starts SMALL, but eventually consumes ALL.

Genesis 4:5-6 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was

very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you

angry? Why is your face downcast?

Genesis 4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do

what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must

rule over it.”

Resting Bitter Face

Luke 6:45b For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

3. Bitterness must be KILLED, or it will KILL.

Genesis 4:8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While

they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Ephesians 4:31-32 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander,

along with every form of malice.   Be kind and compassionate to one another,

forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

We Rid Ourselves Of Bitterness By:

 Being KIND to one another

Treat people the way you WANT to be treated.

 By being COMPASSIONATE with one another.

We give people GRACE.

 FORGIVING each other.

Let the HURT go.
