We all need a lesson in patience! What is patience - and how do we get it?
MESSAGE NOTES:
James 5:7 NIV Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.
PATIENCE: to be of a long of spirit; to not lose heart.
Hebrews 6:12 “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”
James 5:7-9 See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!
The Farmer’s Lesson: Patience is WAITING.
James 5:7 See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.
The farmer is not wondering IF, but waiting for WHEN.
James 5:8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.
Patience isn’t INACTIVITY; it’s focusing on the RIGHT ACTIVITY.
James 5:9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! When you don’t focus on the right thing, You blame people for everything.
When you don’t focus on the RIGHT thing, You BLAME people for everything.
Genesis 50:20 NLT You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.
James 5:10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
The Prophet’s Lesson: Patience feels like SUFFERING.
1 Kings 17:1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.”
If you are not ready to suffer FOR God, then you are not ready to be used BY God.
James 5:11a As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.
Job 42:10,12 NLT When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes. In fact, the Lord gave him twice as much as before! So the Lord blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning.
Job’s Lesson: Patience brings about GOD’S BLESSING.
James 5:11b The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
