Mark 1:10-11 NIV 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
Matthew 17:5 NIV 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
“You are my son”—ACCEPTANCE
“Whom I love”—AFFECTION
“I am well pleased”—AFFIRMATION
Our greatest needs are fulfilled PARTIALLY by people but PERFECTLY in God.
The four words for love in the Greek PHILIA: FRIENDSHIP ERGOS: ROMANTIC STORGE: FAMILY AGAPE: DIVINE, UNCONDITIONAL
1 John 4:7 NLT 7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. Romans 5:8 NLT 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
The love you EXPERIENCE determines the love you EXPRESS.
Love that is experienced in friendships is FICKLE. Love that is experienced in romance is FADING. Love that is experienced in family is FRUSTRATING. Love that is experienced in God is FOUNDATIONAL.
1. God’s love is AVAILABLE.
Romans 5:5 NLT 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
2 Thessalonians 3:5 NLT 5 May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ. Whatever consumes your HEART consumes your LIFE.
2. God’s love is COUNTER-CULTURAL.
Romans 5:6-8 NLT 6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
The world models love as a FEELING.
God models love as an ACTION.
3. God’s love is the SOLUTION.
John 14:15 NLT 15 “If you love me, obey; still others read you should obey. my commandments.
You don’t have a SIN problem, you have a LOVE problem.
The greatest deterrent for sin is LOVE.
1 John 4:11 NLT 11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other.
