In this episode of The Bill Cartwright Show, Bill sits down with former USF associate head coach Derrick Phelps. Derrick discusses growing up in New York and learning the game of basketball from his father. He recalls his time in high school where he was named to the 1990 McDonald's All-American Team. Derrick eventually made his way onto the University of North Carolina's basketball team under coach Dean Smith where he was able to win the 1993 NCAA National Championship, as the Tar Heels defeated Michigan and the Fab Five by a score of 77-71, in the title game. After a long playing career, Derrick took up coaching, landing an assistant job at Columbia University. He served for three seasons as the associate head coach at San Francisco, before following Head Coach Kyle Smith to Washington State after the 2018-19 season
