In today’s episode of the Farm Team Podcast I am pleased to be joined by a lifelong friend of mine, Robbie Shaw. Rob is currently a Registered Clinical Counsellor in the Okanagan Valley serving the cities of Kelowna, West Kelowna, and Penticton. Prior to moving to British Columbia Rob pursued his education in our hometown and graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology, and a Masters of Education in Counselling Psychology. Much of our discussion today will revolve around his important research for his Masters Thesis titled “What’s the Mindset?: An Investigation of Junior Hockey Players’ Attitudes Towards Sport Psychology”.
Rob and I grew up playing hockey and going to school together. We were fortunate to play on many of the same teams as we progressed through minor hockey and ultimately split ways, as we advanced our careers to the junior ranks. Rob played one season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the Calgary Canucks before joining the Fernie Ghostriders the following season where he retired as a Champion of the 2007-2008 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League as known as the KI.
Upon retirement Rob enrolled at the University of Lethbridge and developed a fierce passion for education and I’m extremely proud to see the work he has done and continues to do. His experience as a student, player, coach, and mentor has gifted him with an extensive knowledge base of the transitions athletes go through and I hope this conversation can provide Actionable Insight into the world of Sports Psychology.
