Today, Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us to be ready all the time. That is because the devil is always on the prowl to get victims. He wants us to commit sin, even mortal sin, so that he can bring us to hell. We do not have to imagine grave sensational sins or crimes. It is so easy to be manipulated by him. He sends us ideas, images, memories, and so forth so we are hushed into silence and complicity in the sins and crimes of the others. If he cannot get us to sin, he mollifies the ardor of our love for Jesus and His Church. He fools and deceives us to neglect the good we can and should do. He paralyzes us into inaction, neglect and discouragement. We should be on the ready to struggle, to detect his influence and to call him out and to do all the good we can do in this life, and not only avoid all the evil the devil, the world and the flesh make us tend to do.
