Growing up in low income housing, we walked 2.5 miles from Hahn's Village to the old Eustis Park pool to swim in the public pool. After being thrown into the pool by well meaning older children and taking 1 swimming lesson I learned to swim. Defying the stereotype that black people can't swim, not only can I swim, my daughters are level 5 swimmers. They were asked to swim on their high school's swim team. if a parent can’t swim, there’s only a 13% chance their child will learn. 69% of black children and 58% of Latino children can’t swim compared to 42% of their white children. Black children drown at a rate almost 3 times higher than white children.
