Strong urges to over-eat or binge is a little different than a craving. A craving is typically for a specific food as an urge is a sensation; a feeling that compels you to behave in a specific way. And in this case, to over- eat or over- drink. An urge is also a little different than an impulse in that an impulse lacks temporal pressure. The time factor involved with urges functions by creating psychological stress, which makes us double up our efforts in order to get rid of the annoyance of the sensation as soon as possible. And urges are cyclical. Fulfilling the urge only brings momentary relief. Soon they happen again. They feel insatiable and unlimited. If you identify with an urge, it dominates you and if you don’t, you can dominate it. Example: do you tell yourself you have no control over the urge? If you say these things to yourself, you are identifying with it. If you recognize the truth: you do have control, even though you may give into it, you are NOT identifying with it. Take a listen to learn a skill that will get you moving through over-eating urges with ease and how to create less and less urges to overeat over time.
