As a therapist, I use “talk therapy” often and, we talk a lot in this podcast about “thought work” but its important to also understand we have another way that we approach behavior change as well. This is through mind-body exercises and physical techniques to help move healing along quicker as well as help to make desired changes quicker for my clients. If you are a very “in-your-head” person, a very logical person (you like to think a lot, analyze things), you are uncomfortable moving your body or using your body to express emotion (like dancing), you use food for comfort or to soothe, you experience anxiety, you define yourself as “type A” or perfectionistic or maybe even “rigid” or a black and white (dichotomous) thinker (you think about food as “good” or “bad”), and you have difficulty changing your behaviors or sticking to new habits you really want to stick to, then keep listening….somatic therapy or somatic experiencing might be the piece you are missing.
