Description

Oliver is joined by Dr Nadine Willems to discuss political dissent during Japan’s modernisation period. She highlights the grievances of dissenters and the kind of censorship and repression they had to confront. She discusses the place of anarchism as an anti-capitalist ideology in the early twentieth century and how it was informed by foreign intellectual trends as well as indigenous traditions. The podcast also illustrates the role of poetry as a way to raise awareness about the plight of the Ainu community in northern Japan in the 1930s.
