His story
He was twenty five and ambitious. His parents were poor, having seen the woes of poverty, Ola swore his life would be nothing like the one his parents lived. He had a childhood friend called Jide, Jide’s stock a wee bit better than my husband’s plus growing up was hard for him too. It was therefore a thing of surprise when Jide turned up to their school reunion and he was the picture of affluence. My Ola would not let it pass him, he pulled Jide aside and quizzed him about the source of his wealth. He demanded for his secrets if there was any.
He did not mince words, told my husband he could not bear what Jide had to go through to be who he was. My husband believed all he was referring to was just in the physical, he did not realise that there was a spiritual angle to things and not all spirits were good. Jide told that he belonged to a club that where members were obligated to be kind to each other. The rule of engagement dictated that they be willing to help whoever was is need. It sounded noble so my hubby decided to join.
They went for Ola’s first meeting with the club and there he got the shock of his life. He was promised whatever he desired only it was in exchange for something precious to him. Of all the things listed, Ola felt his ability to have children seemed like the easiest. His terms was that he must not seek to have biologically or otherwise. He was also told that there was no backing out of the deal. He had to pick.
Believing he had no other choice, he chose childlessness. He told me that was the reason he chose to be with someone who would not want to have sex before marriage.
'My dear, I married you knowing you were innocent and fearing this day would come,' he told me. He said he was sorry and I could do whatever I wanted. He would understand.
My life ended at this revelation. This was twenty whole years! What do I do? What should I do? I have been living a lie all these years! What is my life without children? I know someone might say it is not the end of the age but for me it felt like it.
