Light, Light And More Light!!!
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.”… And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. (Genesis 1:1-19)
The sun has one kind of splendour, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendour. (1 Corinthians 15:41)
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16)
It was a Friday night, and I had a vigil to attend, and I was to bring the word at the meeting. As I drove up to the premises, my phone rang, and it was my friend calling from North America. There was no way of imagining the light Samuda sparked inside me that night. I decided to sit in the car to talk to her since it was a long-distance call, and I did not want to be distracted. It was 1.00 am my time and 7.00 pm at her end. I asked God to give me a word as I did not want to be without His counsel. Samuda and I talked for over an hour and just when I was about to end the conversation, she said: “You know, I have wanted to share this with you”. The alarm in my spirit went off!
She took me to the Book of Genesis, and we looked through the story of Creation; the chronicling of the events that began the earth and how they concerned us. After the quick study and it all came together for me.
Below are my gleanings:
* • The story of Creation began with God as the Creator. Conversely, whatever I am trying to create, I must put God first.
* • God saw through the formlessness, the darkness and the void; I must see through whatever looks like that in my own life.
* • The first thing God created was light. Creation must begin with a vision and then be followed with a mission.
The fact that God created light before any other thing intrigued me in no small measure. My question was: what did the light look like? How do you divide light?
By the time we got to the fourth day of Creation, there were two great lights. My interest in them was that they were given rule – one over the day and the other over the night.
Here's the nugget, if it is night-time, I cannot ask the sun to rule and vice versa for daylight. There is a light for each season and time.
This thought was further amplified by the glories of the different lights as recounted in 1 Corinthians 15:41.
The sun has one kind of splendour, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendour.
I gleaned that all the elements mentioned were sources of light. And they differed from one another in glory. For me to live a fulfilling life, I must deploy my specific light source.
We did have a fantastic time in God’s presence that night. It was a word we all needed, me Samuda and the brethren at the vigil.
Finally, Jesus advised, “… let your light so shine…” (Mathew 5:16a) ...
