When Life Issues Keeps you Separate
It had been seven years with many trips to the doctors and long queues at the counselling sessions.
Keeping hope alive was proving to be an arduous task. The word that he had before he married her was that she was the 'wife and mother of his children'. According to the doctors, only a miracle would make that happen. They not only needed the blessing of a baby, but they also needed their pockets refilled, and their hearts mended. She became weary and he, tired and the relationship? Lord have mercy!
He was the best in his class. Everybody called him 'Prof'; he was that good. He knew something about everything. As the encyclopedia in the class, it was assumed that when done with school, jobs would line up for him. Employers would beg him to join them, but when he was ready, no one called, and when he did the calling, no one responded. It started as a joke, but after ten years, it became a yoke. No one could understand it, none of it made sense. He wished many times for death, but he was as fit as a fiddle. Tired, no, weary was more like it.
He was a gifted man of God, the commission was, 'follow me, and I will make you fishers of men'. To him, that meant a large church with a global impact. He saw worldwide crusades with a sea of heads at each gathering. He saw many trips across the world, bearing the word of life. The problem was, all of that was in the spirit. Twenty years in, there were still twenty-five people in the congregation. The message was fresh, but growth in the physical was only in hope.
Rick was the father she never met, the brother she never had, the lover she always imagined. The family she ever hoped for. He promised to be there' till death do part', to love and cherish, in sickness and in health. It was fine until she became sick, and now, he was gone and with him, all her hopes and dreams.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.
(Proverbs 13:12)
Can you relate? Are you burdened by what you had to deal with in life? Are you tired? Do you need to rest a while? Will some respite do? Does it look like you cannot find your way out? As I think about this, a song comes to mind:
COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Refrain
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Refrain
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high
Refrain
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Refrain
It was written and composed in 1897 by Edwin Excell and Johnson Oatman Jnr. As I read through the words of the song, I can only conclude that what is, has already been.
