TRIGGER WARNING: This book was on our summer reading list, and we couldn’t wait to share our thoughts with our Intellects community. It was a fascinating read. Dr. Joy DeGruy defines Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome or PTSS as a condition that exists when a population has experienced multigenerational trauma resulting from centuries of slavery and continues to experience oppression and institutionalized racism today. Added to this condition is a belief that the benefits of the society in which they live are not accessible to them. In this episode, we walk our listeners through the first few sections of the book discussing everything from how our history impacts our children in the classroom to why relationships are so important within the African American community. We unpack so much in this episode, but we are just getting started/ Make sure you tune in to part 2 & 3 of this discussion as well.
