While the Biden administration will soften rhetoric against China, don’t expect much in terms of a deescalation in tensions. There is broad bipartisan support in the US for anti-China measures, and the anger and resentment towards China has been rather tame compared to what many of us expected in the earlier days of the pandemic.
There’s also a risk that a softened tone may be taken by China as a sign of weakness, potentially emboldening Beijing to act even more aggressively on contentious topics such as Uighurs and territorial disputes. 2021 may prove to be one of the pivotal years in geopolitical tensions between the two superpowers.
