Consumeristic Christianity has infiltrated Christianity in America. The idea that church is all about what we can get from it instead of how we can serve is contrary to what the church is designed to be. As Christians we are called to both pour out and be poured in to, we are called to serve as others serve us, we are called to encourage believers in the faith as we are encouraged in the faith. The church is meant to be a unified body, working in unison for the glory of Christ. Serving in a church is oftentimes seen as something that we must do or are required to do, if we do it at all, but that is because we have a misconception of church service.
God has given us the gift of serving one another. Even Jesus says that the Son of Man came to serve, not to be served. Jesus has set the example of service; we are given the responsibility to serve and encourage other believers in a church setting. Understanding that church isn’t about what we can get is essential if we are to fully experience the gift that Christ has given us within the body of Christ.
Consumerism is rampant in American culture, and this consumeristic mindset has taken a foothold in Christianity in America. We must realize our responsibility and the reality of what church is, not an event once or twice a week but a commitment the requires out attention and action.
