John 16:7

7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you

Point one = The Spirit did not just arrive

Point two = The Spirit is a “Person”

He is Person

He is Personal

He is where/how we connect with God

He is in our hearts

He reacts to us in a real relationship

Point three = The quality of the connection depends on the quality of the relationship

How does the Spirit react when we damage the relationship?

The Silent Treatment

6 things we can do to damage our relationship with the Holy Spirit

1-People can Lie to the Spirit

Acts 5:1-11

The Heart of the lie is they wanted to seem more pious, religious, or spiritually mature than they actually are

Why is it so egregious?

John 16:13 - But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

Romans 8:27 - And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

4 Ways we lie to the Spirit

1- When there is no consistency between church life and public life

Matthew 6:1 - Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Matthew 23:27 - Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness

Romans 2:3 - So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

2- When we taught our belief in the Bible BUT disregard it instructions

1 John 2:4 - Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

Luke 6:46 - Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?

Real Life -EXAMPLE

John 13:13-14,17 - You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

3- Anytime we lack love

1 John 4:20-21 - Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

4- Anytime we become Self-Righteous /Judgmental

1 John 1:10 - If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his
