Matthew 5:38-42

3 Humiliating Retaliations to the abuse of others

When others Insult = Endure

Verses 38-39 - You have heard that it was said, ‘AN EYE FOR AN EYEAND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH.’ “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.

1 Peter 3:9  Do not repay evil for evil or insult for insult. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. For to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing from God.

When others Accuse = Indulge

Verse 40 - If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.

Proverbs 15:1 - a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

When others Use = Insist

Verse 41-42 - Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. “Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.

1st Century Jerusalem, a roman soldier could demand anyone to carry a burden for them.  We see this on Jesus' way to the cross. Simeon was forced to carry Jesus' cross.

Go the extra mile. Do more with a cheerful heart!

Endure, indulge and insist

Jesus endured - I Peter 2:23

Jesus - they accused Him - Matthew 27:11

Jesus - they used Him - they expected a miracle and he healed them anyway.
