They both pointed out something to me that I wasn't really paying attention to, and that's that if your portfolio doesn't reflect what you want to shoot, you need to change what that portfolio publicly looks like. That's why you need that master and you need all of your work and backed up multiple versions of your work and everything sitting on your master doc or your master file set on the backend so that you can change that. But you still have the portfolio, and just because you take something publicly off, doesn't mean you got rid of it.
