SHOW NOTES:
In this week’s Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by Tammy Jolivette in an interesting conversation about the concept of hair!
What is hair discrimination?
What is the impact of wearing our hair naturally?
How does wearing our hair textured naturally affect some of us psychologically?
What is a Textured hair?
Hair that has a texture has strands that take the form of curves, spirals, zigzags, or waves; it may also be kinky, coily, curly, or wavy. Using a piece of thread, you can assess the texture of your hair. Liken the strand of thread to a hair strand. You have fine-textured hair if it is thinner than a thread. If both are equal, it is medium, and if the diameter is greater than that of a thread, it is coarse or thick hair.
The unspoken shame in wearing our hair naturally
Black hair is occasionally stigmatized, represented as unkempt or unprofessional, or both. As the definitions of what constitutes "acceptable" hair change, the negative stereotypes associated with black hair are starting to fade. But rather than a genuine change, this appears to be a tendency. Students continue to be impacted by the power of hair and how it is viewed in the environments they inhabit. Some children learned early on the need of dressing appropriately in accordance with social norms since particular hairstyles can cause them problems in their personal and professional lives.
The Texture of Me
The Texture of Me (TTOM) brings awareness of the mental barriers hair discrimination has on people with textured hair. We provided solution-based education, community, and support. We have helped countless people from all cultures and nationalities to have confidence in wearing their textured hair. We also provided awareness solutions with naturally textured hair training to many salons and cosmetology schools. We provide a sacred space for people to express their concerns about the issues of wearing their natural (texture) hair. We also provide self-empowering tools, education, products, and a community to support people to overcome their fears. By helping people with their natural hair journey, we offer the opportunity for them to have more self-love, self-worth, and self-confidence for themselves.
