SHOW NOTES:
This week, Christine Mapondera-Talley and I took the conversation to another level as we talked about celebrating and elevating the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora, the power of storytelling, as well as the importance of narrating the story from an African perspective.
Highlights from the conversation:
[01:15] Christine Mapondera
· A mom and a wife
· Publisher of children’s books and magazine.
· Life and success coach, Meridian Integrative Health Institute, LLC
· Founder of Global Kidz House, a book publishing company specializing in children’s books that celebrate the diversity of Africa and the African diaspora.
[02:09] Becoming a storyteller
Prior to literature, Christine was after fashion and design. She did not have any grand plan and it was more of an idea to satisfy her needs which turned into doors of opportunity. Sometimes, it is out of our own needs and desire to empower our loved ones that the best things come along and get opened up. And in the process, you realize how people appreciate what you we are doing.
[12:08] Culture and ancestral history
Storytelling of our cultural and ancestral history is most often written and published by non-black people. Majority of the time, these books are about a child living in a refugee camp, or escaping a war, or seeking a better life to be saved by somebody. This is problematic because if we are drawn to these kinds of stories, it is like an infatuation. It makes one ignore everything else and are contributing to
the perpetual viewpoints of who Africans are.
[22:22] Empowering parents to empower children
Christine’s passion in storytelling helps empowers moms and dads to empower their children as well. One of the ways she wants to do this is by infusing arts and crafts into helping children understand African countries. The goal was to learn through play or collaborative tasks that would cement in the kids minds. Doing them in the simplistic but educational way.
