SHOW NOTES:
This week, Dawn Dalili and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about redefining tribes to build a thriving community and thriving health. Let’s learn what defines a tribe, the challenges in outgrowing the rules of a tribe, and when to step away from a tribe.

[03:51] The challenge in outgrowing
As we step into different areas of personal development, our immediate community may not understand. Then, we begin to go around like a square trying to peg in a round hole. And it can be very challenging when these people are your tribe. On some level, each of us must confront the challenge that comes with outgrowing one type of tribe – which is one way that we experience safety.
[07:05] The “rule” is the “tribe”
When we look at tribes, in any context, there are certain rules of membership. And the rule is the tribe in a sense. In the same way, if we look at sports, the rules are baseball. If we change the rules, we are playing a game, but we are not playing baseball. Therefore, when we start to break the rules, then we question “am I still heard of” in the tribe. The only way to go around it is to question what are the actual rules.
[08:50] The danger in following the rules
The rules of the games are so clear, we either follow them or not. When we look at tribe, we are looking at families, loved ones, or a group. The rules are for us to guess and then we tend to self-impose adherence to the rules that we presumed are required of membership. That’s when we start to get stuck – and then we are living by it as though it is “truth” required for membership. The way to go around it is to ask ourselves – what else might be true.
[20:50] Letting go of a tribe
Sometimes, some tribes need to be let go of. Especially the tribes that may be so toxic that it warrants stepping away completely. And that does not mean that if you choose to leave a tribe, that there may not be room for membership again. In essence, once part of the tribe, always part of the tribe. In cases like this, it is important to permit ourselves for doing so because one of the things resulting in stepping away from a tribe is enormous guilt that is extremely unhealthy and traumatic.
