Marty was born and raised in Ontario and studied engineering at the University of Ottawa so he could connect with his franco-Ontarian roots. He graduated at the height of a recession in 1990, so he moved halfway across the country to northern Alberta to start an unplanned career in the oil patch. He is married and has 4 adult children, 3 of whom are following in his footsteps as engineers. He's semi-retired now, and enjoys pursuing his life-long passion of backpacking in the Rockies. He currently lives in the country, NW of Calgary.
