Going from 1-11 to 13-0 he and PJ Fleck teamed up to change the culture of a program! Senior quarterback Zach Terrell was a proven winner on the field and in the classroom for Western Michigan University. As a senior, he was the winner of the 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded to the nation’s outstanding scholar-athlete. Terrell completed his bachelors’ degree in December 2015, in finance and then went on to pursue his MBA, in which he held a 4.0 grade point average.
Terrell was a three-time Distinguished Academic All-MAC selection, and he earned the 2016 Mid-American Conference Vern Smith Leadership Award. During his senior season with the Broncos, he was named as a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, presented to the student-athlete who best excels at community service, academics and athletics. Terrell also was a member of the 2016 AFCA All-State Good Works Team, just one of 12 players in the FBS to earn that honor.
A four-year starter, Zach began his career with the Broncos in 2012. He erased nearly every Bronco passing record, including career passing yards with 11,947, which placed him fourth all-time in MAC history. Entering the Goodyear Cotton Bowl game, he had 95 career touchdown passes, second most in Western Michigan history and fourth most in MAC history.
Terrell held a touchdown-interception ratio of 32-3, the best among any quarterback in the nation in 2016 with 30 or more TD passes. Overall, his 32 regular-season TD passes were the 10th most in the country. Terrell also ranked third in the country during his final collegiate season in completion percentage at 70.8 percent and fourth in passing efficiency at 180.6. He was named Manning Star of the Week twice as a senior along with earning MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Along with awards for his performance off the field, Terrell was a semifinalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, Davey O'Brien Award and Manning Award.
