Shugyo is intense physical and spiritual training for the purpose of transformation. It could also be translated as a deep daily practice. That’s a lot like how we run things on the show Sets & Reps. On Episode 30, Rick Testa describes how three of his own deep daily practices have helped him divert from a destructive path. We talk about how martial arts builds discipline, helps you get to the edge of fear, learning, and dealing with your own emotions. Rick is the chief aikido instructor at Shoshinkan dojo, a 4th degree black belt. He is also an ordained zen monk and practitioner of integral bodywork. Integral bodywork is a fascinating type of structural integration therapy (the connection of muscles/soft tissue/joints). I’ve only recently become aware of it through this podcast. We talk about the 10 sessions of integral bodywork, how someone is able to perform it, and what some of the “side effects” are. Thank you for listening!
