Description

A mentor of mine and one of my most valued basketball minds: I'm joined on this episode by Halifax West High School Girls, Highland Park Junior High Boys & Halifax Havoc U18 Maroon head coach Trevor Walter, fresh off his second season with the Warriors in the middle of a pandemic.

Trevor talks about all the ins and outs of the COVID season, including how communication was key, and how creativity came into play from a coaching aspect. We talk about how Tyler @ Maritime Athletic Profiles played a key role in making the season accessible despite it being fan-free, and what it was like not having parents in the gym.

We move into Trevor's upbringing around the game, and how coming to grips with seasonal depression helped push him into coaching. We talk about the values of building a staff and the importance of all the roles of a bench. We break down the difference between expectation and development during a difficult time in our world.

We finish the show talking about the state of the game in Nova Scotia: how refs can and often do impact games, what the two major governing bodies (BNS & MBANS) can do to fix it, the provincial based rules and regulations, and what needs to be done to change them for the good of the sport.

Trevor was an opponent of mine and past guest Jason Bruce during our first year coaching the U14 division 1 Halifax Hurricanes program, while Trevor was with the Y Panthers. Needless to say the lessons we learned during those games will last well beyond our coaching days. Until next time, appreciate you Trevor, thanks for joining me brother!
