This week we're spotlighting the legislative elections that took place in El Salvador on 28th February. This was a remarkable election which saw the New Ideas and GANA parties win an impossible-to-believe landslide majority. These parties are loyal to president Nayib Bukele, a figure who has upended Salvadoran politics and displays authoritarian tendencies that have opened up a concerning new chapter in the history of the country. This election saw the president's party and its ally sweep away the parties that had dominated the country since its bloody civil war of the 1980s, and remove his problem of a legislature that had sometimes served as a frustration for some of his worst excesses.
