Will Black, a Self Mastery coach and owner of The Balanced Self, got sober in Australia, of all places, in April 2018. A world traveler and adventurer, he was studying geography Down Under when he decided the only way he could find happiness was to put the drink down.
(CONTENT WARNING: Will and I discuss ayahuasca, a psychedelic drug in the form of a drink that’s brewed from plants. We also briefly discuss drinking.)
Will’s abuse of alcohol, which saw him blacking out regularly, stemmed from his lifelong battles with anxiety, depression, and the general struggle to find his place in this world.
About a year and a half into his sobriety journey, he traveled to Costa Rice for an ayahuasca ceremony, through which he says he was able to cast out his trauma and mental illness.
Will did tons of research and didn’t take the decision to take the psychedelic drug lightly. It goes without saying that his path to sobriety and holistic living isn’t typical, but it points out that there is no be-all-end-all recovery solution. Everyone’s program is unique.
