The phrase “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” is actually first introduced in a 1944 African journal of American Speech. The initial iteration of the phrase was “you can’t judge a book by it’s binding.” It rose to popularity when it appeared in the 1946 murder mystery Murder in the Glass Room by Lester Fuller and Edwin Rolfe. But this adage applies to more than just literature. The children of Israel judged the newly crowned king by his cover and It cost him dearly. Conversely, the king after God’s heart was forgotten and overlooked initially. On today’s podcast we’ll consider the folly of looking on the outward appearance and remember that God sees the heart.
