“How the mighty have fallen!” We use it as an idiom today to describe the decline or failure of a person who was once very successful, powerful, or great. The phrase actually originates in the Bible as it was used by a shepherd boy turned fugitive named David. He used the phrase to lament the death of his arch-rival King Saul. But to a greater degree, it’s an apt description of the nation of Judah and today we witness the tragic end of a glorious reign of the people of God in the land given to them by Jehovah Himself.
