The early church father Augustine once said, “The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.” That insightful statement is one reason that seeing the full storyline of the Bible is so critically important. The revelation of God’s promise of salvation is not a strictly New Testament concept but it is powerfully foreshadowed in the pages of Old Testament writings. No chapter is clearer in that regard than Joel chapter 2. In this chapter we see the whole of the gospel uniquely declared against the backdrop of divine judgment.
