Description

Critic and journalist Jean Baptiste Alphonse Karr achieved national acclaim in his native France. Known for his biting wit and sharp satire, Karr published a journal called the Wasps in 1839. It was in this journal that he coined the phrase, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” It’s a maxim undoubtedly true of the people of Judah in Nehemiah 13. The book ends on an undoubtedly sour note that highlights the real truth that lies behind the narrative. This was a nation that no matter how much resolve they mustered, the could not uphold the promises they made to God. The legacy of broken promises is a trait true of all humanity and it underscores the need for a Savior, a Messiah whose presence was now imminent.
