Around 40% to 65% of Americans are looking for a new job and about 40% to 50% want to transition careers to something else. But how do you figure out your next step to make sure that what you do is aligned to what you really want to do?

In today’s episode, Marlo Lyons shares some great insights, tips and tools to help you navigate through your own reinvention. Having spent more than 20 years inspiring, motivating and empowering people to excel in their careers and businesses, Marlo made a career transition from TV news reporter for more than a decade to entertainment lawyer to HR business partner in both entertainment technology and the medical technology industries to executive and career coach.

Indeed, Marlo is a shining example of what is possible once you set your mind to something.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

Episode Highlights:

Figure Out Your Values

You need to reevaluate and figure out your values in order to figure out what you want to do. And you have to be true to yourself in the process of figuring yourself out. A lot of people focus on strengths. You may be good at math and you love math, but you may never want to work in math. Also, realize that your values are not the same as your other people’s. Family to you may only mean your immediate circle (parents, kids, siblings), while family to another person may mean their inner circle plus other relatives. And so, those are two different values even though you both value family.

Figure Out Your Skills

Once you’ve identified your values, identify your skills, whether hard or soft. Hard skills are the skills that you can actually see (ex. data analysis, data insights, the physical results) while soft skills are the intangibles, yet extremely important such as emotional intelligence and communication skills.

Then find a career that matches those skills which you will then translate through the lens of the new job.

Stop Making Excuses

You have to decide what the right time is for you. But also acknowledge whether you're making excuses because there is never going to be a perfect time for anything. Ask yourself if you can do your current job for the next 10, 20 or 30 years and if the answer is no, then there is no time like the present.
