Life gives us a lot of stories, it’s our choice how they’re written. Cancer gripped Summer’s world while she was in the fourth grade. Her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and would fight the disease for the next four years. Ensuring the family kept their compass during this war against cancer, Summer’s mother used her actions to etch values that would always remain with Summer. Cancer ultimately took Candi, but her faith, love, and hope stand the test of time.
After a routine physical, Summer wanted extra testing to ensure her current health. Advocating for extra testing because of her family history led to an appointment with a geneticist to discuss the future. Summer tested positive for the BRCA-1 gene which carries a prognosis of a 90% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Summer elected for an immediate mastectomy to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.
