It started out like any other late summer day. Ryan Manahl was mowing the grass before his wife and two sons got home from running errands. Ryan’s youngest son, Tate, rushed down to greet his dad. Ryan was reversing the riding lawn mower and in an instant, Tate was pinned under the operating mower. Tate had entered a blind spot of the mower and was pinned from the belly button to his toes underneath. The seconds that followed, and the quick actions of Ryan and neighbors kept Tate responsive until paramedics arrived. Tate’s body had been horribly injured and he was rushed to the local hospital to be stabilized, before a helicopter transfer to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Tate would undergo immediate surgery in order to save his life. Tate would spend the next 43 days in the hospital!
