As Elise returns to her duties Columnban initiates Warren into his training and deeper understanding of the Shadam-Rioch. Warren encounters Elise en route to the mews of the castle where is in introduced to Elises Jack falcon Matilda. Upon asking how he is coping, Warren confides in Elise that he feels borderline uses. Elise takes Warren to introduce him to Father Coriander, one of the elders of ancient Durnhart, recruited by her father King Marcus, to work on his endeavors. Coriander is the keeper of Castle Calorthang. He reveals that before King Marcus was captured he was trying to build educational projects. After Elise apprentices Warren as someone to read and run errands for Father Coriander. Afterwards, Elise mysteriously and abruptly dismisses Warren, seemingly over a discrepancy over how to phrase the aphorism "Live and learn". As a thunderstorm begins, Warren retires for the night.
