The Celtics wrap up their final preseason bout with an OT loss to Toronto. Like I've been saying all preseason long, you shouldn't focus on the final score but how the team played as a whole. Tonight, we saw a lot of positives but also a lot of areas of improvement for the team. JB came out firing once again and Derrick White has continued to prove that he can play a massive role for this team. Out of the entire roster, I think White has far exceeded expectations this preseason. While he was great and we also saw some solid individual performances throughout, the team as a whole showed some issues.
To start, Brogdon got hurt and didn't return. Adam Himmelsbach tweeted that the injury isn't considered serious and if it were a regular season game, he likely would've returned so I'm not sure how far I would read into that. The bigger issue that plagued the Celtics tonight was rebounding. When Timelord is not in the lineup and you replace him with Derrick White, it gives the Celtics the ability to play more skilled, switch more on the perimeter and play at a faster pace BUT you are losing a massive rebounding presence and it was shown tonight as the Raptors pulled in 22 offensive rebounds. After hearing about Kornet practice all week long, he was a DNP which was a little surprising but we also never saw Kapangele and saw very limited Vonleh minutes as well. All of that seems like an odd choice from new coach Mazzulla. With preseason at its end, we now get to look forward to the start of the regular season. The Celtics certainly have their hands full on opening night against Joel Embiid and the 76ers this coming Tuesday. It will be interesting to see if Mazzulla goes back to a double big lineup with someone like Grant or Kornet or continues to ride with Derrick White especially against a huge team like Philly.
