Description

Gilbert Amelio, the American technology executive, said:

“Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. The leader must be able to share knowledge and ideas to transmit a sense of urgency and enthusiasm to others. If a leader can’t get a message across clearly and motivate others to act on it, then having a message doesn’t even matter.”

Team motivation for building high-performance teams is not simply taking everyone to lunch every now and again. As we’ve seen it involves ensuring there is a strategy for professional development, and a strategy for making turnarounds happen.

But there’s more …

Communication or open communication.

A simple topic but usually the elephant in the room. As the leader, you need to communicate with clarity and authenticity, that is a required skill. But for effective high performance team building and motivation, you also need to ensure you have a strategy to keep the lines of communication open.

As a leader, you need to be able to get a message across, but for the team to be, and stay motivated, you also need to keep the lines of communication open.

Give a clear invitation for your employees to have the liberty to discuss ideas, ask questions, and share problems. They need to feel the explicit and implicit openness to engage with you.

Be present when your team members are conversing with you. There is nothing more devauling than talking to someone who is not present and paying attention to what you have to say.

Take time to know how each member prefers to communicate.

Create a platform for discussion, problem solving, ideas, and feedback. Don’t hog the platform. Give everyone the opportunity to express themselves.

James Humes former presidential speechwriter said:

The art of communication is the language of leadership.

Maintaining an open line of communication between you and your employees is a key aspect of establishing trust, boosting morale, and fostering positive relationships.

Open, frank communication is the linchpin to teamwork. A fractured team is like a fractured bone; fixing it is always painful and sometimes you have to re-break it to heal it fully - and the re-break always hurts more because it is intentional. ~ Patrick Lencioni

It takes effort and planning to make this happen, but it does over time inspire and motivate your team.

Open communication requires building an environment that encourages an exchange of dialogue and ideas. _ Richard Riche
