What is the difference between a healthy relationship with God and empty religion that seeks to use God for our own ends? In this passage, we see the Israelites and the Philistines undercutting the true nature and power of God and attempting to use his throne as a weapon. When they realize that he is not able to be wielded like a weapon, they turn further from him and request a king so they can be like everyone else when God has called them to be holy.
