I’ve never been to Kabul,
But I have seen it on maps.
I’ve heard about it in the news
The place of Afghanistan’s collapse.
I hadn’t heard about the bombing,
The Taliban placing 3 bombs in 2 schools.
But then I saw the photos and heard the story,
The Taliban not playing by anyone’s rules.
I saw the photo of a Hazara girl,
Hurt in every way.
A sight you can’t unsee,
A pain that never goes away.
I’ve seen her dark brown eyes
And her blood-stained face.
I wish I could have saved her
From that time and place.
I’ve never held her hand,
But I hold her in my heart.
I don’t know how to end the hurt
But I know where I will start
I will share her photo,
The picture of her young face.
I’ll share the details of her last day at school
A story not to be erased.
I don’t know this girl.
I never knew her name.
All of that aside,
I love her all the same.
