In today's episode of Psych Talk I chat with Chelsey Swofford, an MSW student at Ohio State who plans on working with those who have experienced adoption trauma and are in the LGBTQ+ community. Chelsey shares her own story of adoption and adoption trauma and why she is so passionate working with individuals with adoption trauma. Chelsey discusses various ways adoption can be traumatic and how the adoption industry in the United States adds to adoption trauma from a systemic level. We discuss the varying views on adoption and where Chelsey stands and Chelsey provides words of advice for adoptive parents or future adoptive parents on how they can best support their adoptive child. Chelsey discusses resources than can be helpful for both adoptive children and adoptive parents, as well as discusses alternatives to adoptions and ways to lessen the impact of adoption trauma on the adoptee.
