Description

Today is the first day of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, a week dedicated to educate the public about the realities of eating disorders and provide hope, support, and visibility to individuals and families affected by eating disorders. In today's episode of Psych Talk, I discuss orthorexia. Orthorexia is not a formal eating disorder but awareness of it has been on the rise in recent years and refers to an unhealthy obsession with being healthy. I discuss the signs and symptoms of orthorexia, potential health consequences of such, and treatment options. Additionally, as this is not a formally recognized eating disorder, I discuss the difficulty with identifying prevalence rates, as well as if orthorexia is a stand alone disorder or a subtype of another disorder.
