In today's episode of Psych Talk, I talk all about licensed mental health professional ethics on social media. Over the past three years we have seen a significant increase in licensed professionals gaining a presence on social media; however, ethics codes surrounding social media have not necessarily caught up. I discuss the current ethical guidelines for social media for counselors, marriage and family therapists, social workers, and psychologists, while highlighting the importance of always follow our ethics code, whether it specifies social media or not. I discuss the difference between and ethical violation and something that borders ethical concerns but does not necessarily violate ethics, as well as reminders for mental health professionals, as well as consumers of mental health content when engaging on social media. Further, I discuss the steps to take when you believe an ethical violation has been committed.
